Hook Grip Taping
Hey from Shield, today Iām going to walk you through how to apply and use GRIP TAPE, in a special method called HOOK GRIP TAPING. This is a special taping technique that some people pick up when initially learning about different ways to tape for fitness. Hook Grip taping is one of the most common and most accessible ways to tape. Why do you use hook grip? You use hook grip when you're doing a lot of barbell work that requires agility with your hands. This means that many common olympic lifts - snatches, cleans, presses, jerk movements, can all be opportunities for hook grip taping.
Agility with your hands with barbells can lead to a lot of friction around the core of the barbell. And specifically when you use the hook grip. When you're doing, let's say it's cleans or snatches or other Olympic lifts, you're actually going to grip the barbell in such a way that your thumb wraps inside your fingers and is directly contacting the knurling of the bar.
So with a lot of use, you can get abrasions and even lacerations on your thumb as it grips the barbell. So to resolve that, you use a hook grip tape. Hook grip traditionally uses stretch tape like this shield grip tape here. Shield training tape has elastic yarns in it. Again, this is like all our tapes. We make it here in the USA, and it's designed to conform to your digits. Allowing you to move and allowing you all the agility of your hands that you're used to while offering some protection.
Hook up taping is very simple. Typically what you do is you lay the initiation of the tape, roll into the web of your thumb, and without hyper extending the tape, leaving it relaxed, you just wrap around two, three times.
Our tapes are simple enough to tear with one hand, but they're strong enough to last for the duration of your workout. Our adhesives are also special so that they actually grip onto the fab fabric more robustly when you compress it. So before you actually get to using your barbell, give a little pressure to help the adhesive grip onto the fabric of the tape.
